There are many options to consider when having a breast augmentation. It might seem intimidating, but actually having options is a good thing because it allows you to get the exact results you want.

There are many different choices available to help you reach your goal. So if you are considering breast augmentation, start by discussing your desired outcome with your cosmetic surgeon. Here are some of the details you should discuss with your surgeon.

Size and Shape of the Breast Implant

You can choose either a round shape that will produce a full, perky breast, or a teardrop shape that is more subtle and natural looking. The shape you choose depends on your desired outcome.

Implants come in many sizes, so it is important to choose the correct size. How big is too big? If you choose implants that are too big they will be heavy and uncomfortable. This could lead to complications. Your current breast tissue can also be a factor in deciding how big you can go – if there is too little tissue, the implant edges may be visible. Discuss your wishes with your plastic surgeon and together you will come to the right decision for you.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Should you do saline or silicone breast implants? Well, that depends. There are many differences between the two, including price. Saline implants cost less than silicone implants, so if money is a concern, saline may be the way to go.

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water (saline). If the implant shell should leak for any reason your body would absorb the saline. Saline implants have a uniform shape and firmness and feel much less like natural breast tissue.

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. When you touch them, they feel more natural to the touch. With silicone implants, the incision site will be slightly larger. If the implant shell should leak the implant will not collapse. The gel may remain inside the shell, or it may escape. With silicone implants, it is recommended you undergo an MRI scan every three years after the initial placement to make sure that they are functioning correctly. Silicone implants are FDA approved for women 22 years of age and older.

Implant Placement

Placement options for breast implants include subglandular placement where the implants are placed behind the breast tissue but in front of the chest muscles. Another option is partial submuscular placement where the implants are placed behind the breast tissue and partially behind the muscles. A third option is complete submuscular placement where the implant is placed fully behind the muscles. Your doctor will consult with you and determine the best placement for your implants. Determining factors include your lifestyle, the amount of natural breast tissue that you have, and the size of the implants.
