Breast augmentation can improve the self-esteem and confidence of women who have always felt uncomfortable with their small breasts or women who have lost breast tissue, due to aging, weight loss, pregnancy or other medical conditions. For many women, finally having the figure of their dreams improves their entire outlook on life.

One of the most confusing parts of considering a breast augmentation is deciding the size of the implant. There are many shapes, sizes, and materials to choose from that the experience can be overwhelming.  There are a few things to consider when choosing a breast size.

YOUR BODY FRAME

Your chest width, shoulder width, and current breast size will influence the size of implants you can receive. Small frames are not able to support large implants, implants too large for your body can cause back, shoulder, and chest pain. Your current breast size is important because you need to have enough existing breast tissue to cover the new implant. Going from double A’s to double D’s probably won’t be possible. In addition, the same size DD’s on a tall, broad-shouldered woman will not look the same on a more petite woman with a smaller frame.

BREAST SHAPE, FULLNESS, WIDTH, AND SIZE

When considering breast augmentation, stop thinking in cup sizes. Bra sizes vary wildly from brand to brand and talking in cup sizes can lead to miscommunication and unrealistic expectations. In addition, you should think about the exact shape, area of fullness, and diameter of the breast. You should also consider the outward projection of the breast and how far out you would like them to extend.

YOUR LIFESTYLE

If you are someone who runs marathons, lifts heavy objects, or otherwise performs activities where your breasts will get in the way, you’ll want to consider smaller implants. Exercise and frequent chest movement and large implants don’t mix. It often causes pain, frustration, and an undesired look.

To choose the best breast implant size, consult with a cosmetic surgeon and be clear about your expectations, your lifestyle, and what “look” of implants you are going for. And, of course, take into consideration your existing breast size and body frame.
