It is normal to have questions and concerns regarding breast augmentation, as it is a very big decision to make. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Eberle of Weston Center for Plastic Surgery want to make sure you are comfortable and informed in your decision-making process, so here are some facts pertaining to frequently asked questions:
Regarding the Implants
Your surgeon will review your anatomy and health history to help you decide which type, placement, and size of the implant are best for your body and desired results. Both saline and silicone implants give natural looking/feeling results, and both are very safe. While it used to be recommended that silicone implants be replaced after ten years, that is no longer true! The only reason to replace implants in this day in age is if there is a problem, which would be very obvious to the patient and physician. Many patients wear their implants for 20 or more years!
Regarding your Body
You should be at a stable weight that is near your ideal weight before the procedure. Any large drop or increase in weight following the procedure could drastically change the appearance of your results. While you should not have the procedure if you are actively trying to get pregnant, it is okay to have breast augmentation done before you are finished having children. In most cases, breast augmentation does not interfere with breastfeeding. Current mammogram recommendations are the same for women with breast implants as for those without, but it is very important to tell your mammography technician before the procedure that you have implants. Also, current data reports that women with implants have no greater risk of breast cancer than those without.
You will be given a post-op bra to wear for the first week after surgery, and your surgeon will discuss which bras will be best to wear during the remainder of your recovery based off of your specific situation. You can begin showering the day following your surgery.
